The county was formed in 1764 from parts of Bladen County and New Hanover County.  It was named for the colonial port of Brunswick, NC (now in ruins) which was itself named for Duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg, at the time held by the British kings of the House of Hanover.

Rice was an important crop for Brunswick County.  In 1772, while most rice was produced for local consumption, more than 500 barrels were shipped from Port Brunswick.  In 1860, Brunswick County produced 6,775,286 pounds of rice, which was about 90% of the state's total rice production.

Over many years, rice crops have been replaced with homes and businesses and Brunswick County has become a nice, quiet vacation lovers destiny.
